The Revolutionary who overthrew the Cuban government and brought Communism to the island nation in 1959, Fidel Castro. died Friday at the age of 90. Castro was a constant issue in the United States’  during his lengthy reign, as he provoked both the disastrous Bay of Pigs insurrection and the Cuban Missile Crisis in the 1960s. As The New York Times  puts it, “Castro’s defiance of American power made him a beacon of resistance in Latin America and elsewhere, and his bushy beard, long Cuban cigar and green fatigues became universal symbols of rebellion.” But many in his homeland considered him an oppressor, often risking their lives to sail to Florida on makeshift rafts in order to achieve liberty.
