The divide between the country and Americana genres has blurred in recent years, which Eric Church thinks is a great thing. “[They’re] the same family. Maybe different cousins, but we’re the same family,“ Church said last week after his Album of the Year win at the CMA Awards for Mr. Misunderstood. “I think that when it works right, we’re all pulling for each other, and we don’t draw that hard line in the sand of, ’Well, you’re here and I’m here.’” After citing Chris Stapleton’s success, as well as other Americana artists who are “relevant” and “can go sell out two or three Rymans,” Church expressed excitement about country music today. “It’s a time that I think historically, as people look back on it, they can look to this period and go, ’That was a positive period in country music,’“ he says.
